Using the Terminal to install or remove Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X

Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X can be installed or removed from your Mac OS X computer via the Terminal (command line) and hence if you have a number of Mac computers this option can be scripted to make the process more efficient.

Note: This article is intended for use by users who are experienced in using the Terminal application and require a method of installation or removal other than the recommended installer package.  For an alternative method (not using Terminal) see:

What To Do

Select the instructions based on the version of Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X you have installed (article 112457 explains how to check the version):

Installation via the Terminal

Notes:

  • These instructions do not work for the FREE/Home Edition product. Go here.
  • For Sophos Cloud managed installation see article 120570.
  1. Open the Terminal application (located in the 'Applications' | 'Utilities' folder). You can also open a terminal by searching for it with Spotlight.

  2. Copy the 'Sophos Anti-Virus.mpkg' installer file a preferred location. In The example commands below the installer is located on the Desktop.

  3. Change the directory to the one containing the installer.
    cd /Users/<yourUsername>/Desktop/
  4. The following command needs to be done as root, In the example this is done using the 'sudo' command:
    sudo installer -pkg 'Sophos Anti-Virus.mpkg' -target /

    Note: You will be prompted for a password. This is normally the password of your account used to log on to the computer if your user account has administrative rights.

Removal via the Terminal

Notes:  

  • These instructions do not work for the FREE/Home Edition product.  Go here.
  • For Sophos Cloud managed installation see article 120856.
  1. Open the Terminal application (located in the 'Applications' | 'Utilities' folder). You can also open a terminal by searching for it with Spotlight (see the screenshot in step one of 'Installation via the Terminal' above).

  2. Change the directory to the following Sophos Anti-Virus directory:
    cd /Library/Application\ Support/Sophos/opm/Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/

    Note: For standalone installations you will need to change to the following directory:
    cd /Library/Application\ Support/Sophos/opm-sa/Installer.app/Contents/MacOS/
  3. The following command needs to be run as root, In the example this is done using the 'sudo' command:
    sudo ./InstallationDeployer --remove

    Note: You will be prompted for a password. This is normally the password of your account used to log on to the computer if your user account has administrative rights.

    sudo installer -pkg 'Remove Sophos Anti-Virus.pkg' -target /

    Note: You will be prompted for a password. This is normally the password of your account used to log on to the computer if your user account has administrative rights.
