What To Do
When renaming a computer with SafeGuard Enterprise installed, you must follow a specific order of steps to avoid side effects.
The detailed procedure is:
Log on at POA level and disable automatic pass through to Windows.
At Windows level, log on with an administrative account.
Change the computer name but don’t restart afterwards.
- Search for the computer in the Management Center, then delete it from the Management Center manually.
If the computer is a member of an Active Directory, re-synchronize the Active Directory and check if the computer was imported correctly with the new name. If the machine was auto-registered this step can be skipped.
Synchronize the client with the SafeGuard Enterprise server and ensure that the connection was correctly established using the tray icon.
Restart the computer.
- The POA will be in autologon mode at the next reboot, and the first user that logs on to the machine will become owner.
Please note that the computer key name is not changed, and it is resent to the SafeGuard Enterprise back-end with the old name. This means that in the event of recovery, you must use the old machine when searching for keys. Best practice is to use the key GUID instead, as it is unique.
Further information on recovery can be found in the knowledgebase article SafeGuard Enterprise: Recovery scenarios.
