SafeGuard Enterprise Client: Installation/Update fails with error 2738 or 1720

Issue

SafeGuard Enterprise Client: Installation/Update fails with error 2738

The installer log shows the following:

DEBUG: Error 2738: Could not access VBScript runtime for custom action

First seen in

SafeGuard Device Encryption 5.50

Operating System
Windows XP SP2+
Windows Vista SP2
Windows 7

Cause

One or more DLL files are not registered correctly with the operating system.

What To Do

On the computer that has given the error:

  1. Log on as a user with full administrative rights.
  2. Back up the registry.  Read article 10388 before continuing.
  3. Re-register the files vbscript dll and the jscript dll, by following the steps that relate to your operating system: 
    • Windows XP 
      1. Click Start | Run | Type: cmd.exe | Press return. 
      2. Type regsvr32 vbscript.dll and press [Enter]. 
      3. Type regsvr32 jscript.dll and press [Enter]. 
    • Windows Vista 32Bit version
      1. Go to All Programs | Accessories. Right-click on 'Command prompt' and 'Run as administrator'.
      2. Type regsvr32 vbscript.dll and press [Enter]. 
      3. Type regsvr32 jscript.dll and press [Enter]. 
    • Windows Vista x64 version 
      1. Go to All Programs | Accessories. Right-click on 'Command prompt' and 'Run as administrator'.
      2. Change directory to C:\Windows\syswow64\
      3. Type regsvr32 vbscript.dll and press [Enter].
      4. Type regsvr32 jscript.dll and press [Enter] 
    • Windows 7 32-bit version 
      1. Click on Start | Run | Type: regedit.exe | Press return. 
      2. Check the following key:
        HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{B54F3741-5B07-11cf-A4B0-00AA004A55E8}\InprocServer32
        If this key had not got a data value of C:\Windows\System32\vbscript.dll edited accordingly.
      3. Go to All Programs | Accessories.
      4. Right-click on 'Command prompt' and 'Run as administrator'. 
      5. Type regsvr32 vbscript.dll and press [Enter].
      6. Type regsvr32 jscript.dll and press [Enter]. 
    • Windows 7 64-bit version
      1. Click on Start | Run | type in regedit.exe | Press return. 
      2. Check the following key:
        HKLM\SOFTWARE\wow6432node\Classes\CLSID\{B54F3741-5B07-11cf-A4B0-00AA004A55E8}\InprocServer32
        If this key had not got a data value of C:\Windows\System32\vbscript.dll edited accordingly.
      3. Go to All Programs | Accessories.
      4. Right-click on 'Command prompt' and 'Run as administrator'.
      5. Type regsvr32 vbscript.dll and press [Enter].
      6. Type regsvr32 jscript.dll and press [Enter]. 

  4. Reboot the machine
  5. Re-run the installation.

It should now proceed correctly however in some cases it may be necessary to follow these steps by registering the following files as well:

  • scrobj.dll 
  • wshext.dll
  • dispex.dll
  • wshom.ocx
