Virus engine for Sophos gateway security products has been updated to address the potential vulnerabilities

Sophos Anti-Virus version 4.83 has been released to Sophos gateway security products to address the potential vulnerabilities revealed by Tavis Ormandy and described in article 118424.  This Anti-Virus version includes Virus Engine 3.37.2.

Sophos Email Appliance

The staged roll-out of Sophos Anti-Virus 4.83 was completed on November 7th 2012. This update was automatically applied to all customers, with no extra configuration required.

To check the installed engine version:

  1. Login to your Sophos Email Appliance
  2. Select ‘Configuration | System | Updates’
  3. Check the Installed version number for Threat Definitions. The first 3 digits indicate the Sophos Anti-Virus version number. For example, version 483000.0.20121108.1256 is the correct version 4.83

If your Sophos Email Appliance is not successfully upgrading its threat definitions: Run the Network Connectivity Test in ‘Configuration | Network | Network Connectivity’, and resolve any reported problems. For further assistance, contact Sophos Technical Support using the link at the bottom of this article.

Sophos Web Appliance

The staged roll-out of Sophos Anti-Virus 4.83 was completed on November 7th 2012. This update was automatically applied to all customers, with no extra configuration required.

To check the installed engine version:

  1. Login to your Sophos Web Appliance
  2. Select ‘Configuration | System | Updates’
  3. Check the Installed version number for Threat definitions. The Sophos Anti-Virus version number is displayed as part of the last 7 digits. For example, version 2012.11.8.4830002 is the correct version 4.83

If your Sophos Web Appliance is not successfully upgrading its threat definitions: Run the Network Connectivity Test in ‘Configuration | Network | Network Connectivity’, and resolve any reported problems. For further assistance, contact Sophos Technical Support using the link at the bottom of this article.

PureMessage for UNIX

The staged roll-out of Sophos Anti-Virus 4.83 was completed on November 8th 2012. This update was automatically downloaded by any customer updating from Sophos' repositories.

To check the installed engine version::

  1. Login to your PureMessage for UNIX server
  2. Switch to the PureMessage user. For example:
    • su – pmx6
  3. Query the Sophos Anti-Virus version:
    • ppm query PureMessage-Sophos-Engine

If the engine version has not updated after the November 8th, follow these instructions to check the repository information and attempt a manual update:

  1. Check PureMessage is updating from a Sophos repository:
    • ppm set
      The recommended repository is:
      http://pmx-dynamic.sophos.com/pmx/mainline/<OPERATING SYSTEM>/
  2. If necessary, the repository can be changed. For example, run the following as the 'root' user:
    • /opt/pmx6/bin/pmx-setup –repo http://pmx-dynamic.sophos.com/pmx/mainline/linux/
  3. Attempt to update the engine manually. Run the following as the 'pmx' user:
    • ppm verify –upgrade PureMessage-Sophos-Engine

Sophos UTM

UTM appliances (inc. UTM virtual machines) are already using Sophos Anti-Virus 4.83. This update was automatically downloaded from Sophos' repositories.
