Understanding how Sophos reports virus protection is 'out of date' to Windows Security Center

This article provides information about how Sophos reports if it is up to date in Windows Security Center (WSC). This mainly applies to Workgroup network environments, but can apply to Domain environments when Windows Security Center has been enabled via Group Policy.

Note:  The issue you experience when Sophos Anti-Virus reports it is out of date is shown in article 58307.

Sophos Endpoint Security and Control

Operating systems
Windows XP and later operating systems.

How is Sophos determined to be up to date in Windows Security Center?

Sophos Anti-Virus - Versions prior to 10.3.6

You will not see an alert for out of date virus protection when the following is true:

  • If your Virus data date is less than 35 days old (regardless of the age of your last identity ('.IDE') update).

You will see an alert for out of date virus protection when one of the following is true:

  • If your Virus data date is more than 120 days old.
  • If your Virus data date is between 35 and 120 days old AND you haven’t had an identity ('.IDE'). update in the last 5 days.

Sophos Anti-Virus - Version 10.3.6 and later

You will not see an alert for out-of-date virus protection when the following is true:

  • If your Virus data date is less than 35 days old, regardless of the age of your last identity ('.IDE') update.

You will see an alert for out-of-date virus protection when both of the following are true:

  • your Virus data date is older than 35 days
    AND
  • you haven’t had an identity ('.IDE'). update in the last 5 days.

How do you determine the Virus data date?

  1. Open 'Sophos Endpoint Security and Control' by right clicking on the Sophos shield icon in the system try and selecting 'Open Sophos Endpoint Security and Control'.
  2. Click 'View product information'.
  3. Expand the 'Software' section of 'Anti-virus and HIPS'.
  4. The date will be listed under the item 'Virus data date'.

How do you determine the age of the last identity update ('.IDE') ?

  1. Open the Sophos Anti-VIrus folder in Explorer:
    32-bit: C:\Program Files\Sophos\Sophos Anti-Virus\
    64-bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\Sophos\Sophos\ Anti-Virus\
  2. Sort the directory by 'Date modified' (Click on the column header).
  3. Look for the first '.ide' file from the the top and record the date and time.
