How to check which SQL Server instance your Sophos management server is using

This article explains how to identify the location and SQL Server instance name (either local or remote) used by your Sophos management server.

Known to apply to the following Sophos product(s) and version(s)

Sophos Enterprise Manager
Sophos Control Center
Enterprise Console

What To Do

  1. On your Sophos management server open the Windows registry editor (Start | Run | Type: regedit.exe | Press return).

  2. Browse to the following registry key:
    • 32-bit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sophos\EE\Management Tools\
    • 64-bit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Sophos\EE\Management Tools\

  3. On the right hand side locate the 'DatabaseConnectionMS' value.  The value will contain a text string similar to:

    Provider=SQLOLEDB;Integrated Security=SSPI;Initial Catalog=SOPHOS521;Data Source=(local)\sophos;

The 'Data Source' value is likely to contain one of the following:

Data Source value The management server is...
(local)\sophos
...connecting to a 'sophos' named SQL Server instance on the same computer.
.\sophos
localhost\sophos
127.0.0.1\sophos
(local)\[customInstanceName] ...connecting to a customized named SQL Server instance on the same computer.
[remoteComputer]\sophos ...connecting to a 'sophos' named SQL Server instance on a remote computer.
[remoteComputer]\[customInstanceName] ...connecting to a customized named SQL Server instance on a remote computer.
