At Sophos we’re investing heavily in delivering the best data protection solutions to meet the changing needs of today’s organizations. These include:

Encryption on Macs – extending our file and folder encryption capabilities to Macs, as well as enabling management of built-in FileVault 2 encryption on the latest Mac OS X.

Securing data stored in the cloud – including virtual servers and Cloud storage services like Dropbox, Egnyte or Microsoft’s SkyDrive.

Securing data on mobile devices – protecting sensitive information that is stored on and can be accessed by mobile devices.

Encryption for Windows 8 – managing and extending the built-in BitLocker disk encryption as well as supporting password recovery, removable media, file and folder and cloud storage encryption on Windows 8.

Retirement of Configuration Protection.

To enable our engineering teams to focus on these new technologies, we are making a number of changes to our product lifecycles. These include retiring Configuration Protection.

  • We stopped selling new licenses for Configuration Protection on 30 April 2013.
  • We will continue to provide support for Configuration Protection until 30 April 2015.

Your current implementation will continue working as normal. You can also continue to use these products beyond the end of support dates. When considering your longer term plans we recommend you work with a Sophos partner to determine the best solution for your business.

What can you use as alternative to Configuration Protection?

Sophos is committed to offering device control capabilities as an integrated part of our Endpoint Protection agent. However we have decided to discontinue our offering of a standalone device control agent managed by SafeGuard Enterprise.

Sophos Endpoint Protection provides integrated device control today for all customers, whether the endpoint is managed on the premises, with UTM, or in the cloud. Integrated Device Control enables you to block storage, network, and short-range devices as follows:

Storage

  • Removable storage devices (e.g USB flash drives, PC Card readers, and external hard disk drives)
  • Optical media drives (CD-ROM/DVD/Blu-ray drives)
  • Floppy disk drives
  • Secure removable storage devices (e.g. SanDisk Cruzer Enterprise, SanDisk Cruzer Enterprise FIPS Edition, and IronKey Enterprise Basic Edition USB flash drives with hardware encryption)

Using the secure removable storage category, you can easily allow the use of supported secure removable storage devices while blocking other removable storage devices.

Network

  • Modems
  • Wireless (Wi-Fi interfaces, 802.11 standard)

For network interfaces, block bridged mode is supported. This significantly reduces the risk of network bridging between a corporate network and a non-corporate network.

Short Range

  • Bluetooth interfaces
  • Infrared (IrDA infrared interfaces)

Alternatively, if you require either a standalone device control agent, or features not offered by Sophos Endpoint Protection, refer to the Safend Standalone Port Protector product on which the Sophos Configuration Protection agent was based. Contact your Sophos partner for more information on how to migrate.
