Vendor description This security update resolves a privately reported vulnerability in Microsoft Windows. The vulnerability could allow remote code execution if a user opens a file that contains a specially crafted OLE object. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could gain the same user rights as the current user. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.
SophosLabs comments This privately reported remote code execution vulnerability occurs due to the incorrect handling of OLE objects in memory by Windows. Although the vulnerability requires local access to the victim's computer, this can be easily achieved via social engineering tricks to encourage the victim to open a specially crafted OLE file via email. Once the vulnerability is exploited, the attacker can then gain access to the victim's computer and use it for other malicious intent.
