W32/SdBot-JK is a worm which attempts to spread to remote network shares. It also contains backdoor Trojan functionality, allowing unauthorised remote access to the infected computer via IRC channels while running in the background as a service process.
W32/SdBot-JK copies itself to the Windows system folder as taskmgsr.exe and creates entries in the registry at the following locations to run itself on system startup:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
\Microsoft Task Messenger Config = taskmgsr.exe
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
\Microsoft Task Messenger Config = taskmgsr.exe
W32/SdBot-JK attempts to exploit shares with weak administrator passwords in order to copy itself other computers on the network. The worm chooses an IP address at random and attempts to copy itself to the Windows system folder on the remote computer as a file named GT.exe.
The worm also contains a backdoor which listens for commands via IRC allowing a remote intruder to gain access and control over the computer.
W32/SdBot-JK spreads to network shares with weak passwords as a result of the backdoor Trojan element receiving the appropriate command from a remote user. W32/SdBot-JK deletes the host computer's own C$, D$, E$ and ADMIN$ network shares.
