W32/Sdbot-Fam is a family of worms which attempt to spread to remote network shares. The worms also contain backdoor Trojan functionality, allowing remote access to the infected computer via IRC channels while running in the background as a service process.
W32/Sdbot-Fam worms usually spread to network shares with weak passwords and via network security exploits, often only spreading as a result of the backdoor Trojan element receiving the appropriate command from a remote user.
W32/Sdbot-Fam worms copy themselves to the Windows system folder and create entries in the registry so as to run themselves on system startup. The following registry locations are the most commonly affected:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
