W32/Rbot-GY is a worm which attempts to spread to remote network shares. The worm contains backdoor Trojan functionality, allowing unauthorised remote access to the infected computer via IRC channels while running in the background as a service process.
W32/Rbot-GY spreads to network shares with weak passwords as a result of the backdoor Trojan element receiving the appropriate command from a remote user. W32/Rbot-GY also tries to disable network privileges.
W32/Rbot-GY moves itself to the Windows system folder as WAUMGRD.EXE and then sets itself to be a read-only, hidden system file.
W32/Rbot-GY creates entries at the following locations in the registry so as to run itself on system startup:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\
Windows Guard = WAUMGRD.EXE
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices\
Windows Guard = WAUMGRD.EXE
W32/Rbot-GY logs keystrokes upon a successful IRC connection and logs the keystrokes to %lt;Windows system folder>\keys.txt
The worm also attempts to steal CD keys.
