W32/Rbot-CW is a worm which attempts to spread to remote network shares. It also contains backdoor Trojan functionality, allowing unauthorised remote access to the infected computer via IRC channels while running in the background as a service process.

W32/Rbot-CW spreads to network shares with weak passwords as a result of the backdoor Trojan element receiving the appropriate command from a remote user.

W32/Rbot-CW moves itself to the Windows system folder under a random filename and creates entries in the registry at the following locations to run on system startup:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\
MSN Messenger = <filename>
restrictanonymous = 1

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices\
MSN Messenger = <filename>
EnableDCOM = N

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\
MSN Messenger = <filename>

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServices\
MSN Messenger = <filename>

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\
MSN Messenger = <filename>

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\OLE\
MSN Messenger = <filename>

HKCU\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\
MSN Messenger = <filename>

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\OLE\
MSN Messenger = <filename>

W32/Rbot-CW may end the TASKMGR.EXE process so the resident worm may be difficult to terminate.
