W32/Poebot-C is a network worm and IRC backdoor Trojan for the Windows platform.
When first run, W32/Poebot-C copies itself to the Windows system folder as defragfat39.exe and creates the following registry entry in order to run each time a user logs on:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\
Windows DLL Loader
"<Windows system folder>\defragfat39.exe"
The backdoor component of W32/Poebot-C joins an IRC channel and awaits further commands from a remote user. The attacker can issue commands that cause W32/Poebot-C to perform the following functions:
take part in distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks
packet sniffing
steal software product registration information
start an FTP server
hijack FTP client software
start a port scanner
list/terminate system processes and services
W32/Poebot-C spreads through network shares protected by weak passwords and through the LSASS vulnerability (MS04-011). Patches for vulnerabilities exploited by W32/Poebot-C can be obtained from Microsoft at:
