W32/Codbot-T is a worm and IRC backdoor Trojan for the Windows platform.

W32/Codbot-T runs continuously in the background, providing a backdoor server which allows a remote intruder to gain access and control over the computer via IRC channels.

W32/Codbot-T includes functionality to:

- log keystrokes
- silently download, install and run new software
- access the internet and communicate with a remote server via HTTP
- perform port scanning

W32/Codbot-T spreads to other network computers by exploiting common buffer overflow vulnerabilites, including LSASS (MS04-011), RPC-DCOM (MS04-012) and MSSQL (MS02-039) (CAN-2002-0649).

When first run W32/Codbot-T copies itself to <System>\Rpcmon.exe.

The file Rpcmon.exe is registered as a new system driver service named "Rpcmon", with a display name of "Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Monitoring", a description of "Monitoring the end point mapper and other RPC services." and a startup type of automatic, so that it is started automatically during system startup. Registry entries are created under:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Rpcmon\

The following patches for the operating system vulnerabilities exploited by W32/Codbot-T can be obtained from the Microsoft website:
