Issue

The sophos_autoupdate1.dir directory:

  • Has a large number of files and folder contained in it.
  • Is taking up a lot of disk space.
  • Cannot be deleted.

The following error may also be seen in the ALC.log file:

The operation failed due to an unknown error: [domainName\username] unknown error boostfilesystem in directory C:\programfiles\sophos\autoupdate\savxp\programfiles\sophos\sophos anti-virus\sav(de).url

Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+ 7.6.21

Cause

The Windows Indexing service is locking the files and they cannot be deleted after an update.

What To Do

You need to exclude certain folders Sophos AutoUpdate uses so the Windows Indexing does not block updates or lock files and prevent their deletion.  For more information see article 59494.
