PureMessage for Microsoft Exchange: error 0x80070534 during installation

When installing PureMessage for Microsoft Exchange, installation fails and you see the following error message:

error 0x80070534
no mapping between account names and security IDs was done.

PureMessage for Microsoft Exchange, version 3.x

Operating system
Microsoft Windows Server 2000 and 2003

What to do

The previous version of PureMessage for Microsoft Exchange that was installed on the network created the Sophos PureMessage Administrator group. However, the group name followed the pre-Windows 2000 naming convention and so it was missing spaces.

  1. In Windows, create a new PureMessage Administrator group with the proper name: Sophos PureMessage Administrators.
  2. Restart the PureMessage installation program.
