How to stop and start the PureMessage services

This article provides best practice advice for stopping and starting PureMessage for Exchange services. As the PureMessage scanning processes will be offline, this article advises that the related Exchange processes are also stopped. It is therefore advised that you perform this process in a maintenance window or similar period.

Note: Incorrectly stopping or starting the PureMessage services can cause problems (e.g., mail building in queue, console not displaying properly, etc).

What To Do

For PureMessage on Exchange 2003 (not-clustered)

Stop services

  1. Stop the Sophos AutoUpdate Service
  2. Stop the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol service
  3. Stop the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service
  4. Stop the Sophos PureMessage Scanner service
  5. Stop the Sophos PureMessage Service
  6. Stop the Sophos PureMessage Running Object Table service
  7. Stop the Sophos Anti-virus service.
  8. Open a command prompt and run 'IISRESET /STOP'

Start services

  1. Open a command prompt and run 'IISRESET /START'
  2. Start the Sophos Anti-virus service.
  3. Start the Sophos PureMessage Running Object Table service
  4. Start the Sophos PureMessage service
  5. Start the Sophos PureMessage Scanner service
  6. Start the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service
  7. Start the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol service
  8. Start the Sophos AutoUpdate Service
  9. End the almon.exe process and restart it from 'Start|All programs|Start up'.

For PureMessage on Exchange 2003 cluster

Note: This will cause the node to fail over.

Stop services

  1. Stop the Sophos AutoUpdate Service
  2. Take all SMTP Virtual Server Instances offline
  3. Take the Exchange Information Store Instance offline
  4. Take the Sophos PureMessage service resource offline
  5. Stop the Sophos PureMessage Service
  6. Stop the Sophos PureMessage Running Object Table service
  7. Stop the Sophos Anti-virus service.

Start services

  1. Start the Sophos Anti-virus service.
  2. Start the Sophos PureMessage Running Object Table service
  3. Start the Sophos PureMessage service
  4. Bring the Sophos PureMessage service resource online
  5. Bring the Exchange Information Store Instance online
  6. Bring all SMTP Virtual Server Instances online
  7. Start the Sophos AutoUpdate Service
  8. End the almon.exe process and restart it from 'Start|All programs|Start up'.

For PureMessage on Exchange 2007 and above (not clustered and clustered)

Note: If clustered the node will fail over.

Stop services

  1. Stop the Sophos AutoUpdate Service
  2. Stop the Microsoft Exchange Transport service
  3. Take all SMTP Virtual Server Instances offline
  4. Stop the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service
  5. Take the Exchange Information Store Instance offline
  6. Stop the Sophos PureMessage Scanner service
  7. Take the Sophos PureMessage service resource offline
  8. Stop the Sophos PureMessage Service
  9. Stop the Sophos PureMessage Running Object Table service
  10. Stop the Sophos Anti-virus service .

Start services

  1. Start the Sophos Anti-virus service.
  2. Start the Sophos PureMessage Running Object Table service
  3. Start the Sophos PureMessage service
  4. Start the Sophos PureMessage Scanner service
  5. Bring the Sophos PureMessage service resource online
  6. Start the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service
  7. Bring the Exchange Information Store Instance online
  8. Start the Microsoft Exchange Transport service
  9. Bring all SMTP Virtual Server Instances online
  10. Start the Sophos AutoUpdate Service
  11. End the almon.exe process and restart it from 'Start|All programs|Start up'.
