How to enable boot messages output via serial console V7 on Astaro Security Gateway

What To Do

Note: You will require a nullmodem cable:

Baudrate: 38400 bps(older ASGs may use 9600bps), 8N1 (8 databits/no pariti/ 1
stoppbit) , Xon/Xoff or no flow control

  1. Mount -o remount, rw /boot
  2. Edit both files /boot/grub/menu.lst-default  and /boot/grub/menu.lst and modify as follows:
    To enable serial console please uncomment the following two lines.

    You may also want to add a line like 'console=ttyS0,57600' to the 'kernel' lines below unit=1 (ttyS1)

    serial --unit=1 --speed=38400  
    terminal --timeout=0 serial
    title  Astaro Security Gateway 7.0
    root (hd0,0)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/disk/by-label/root vga=normal video=ofonly
    splash=silent console=ttyS1,38400n8
    initrd /boot/initrd
  3. Now:
      grub --no-floppy
      grub> root (hd0,0) 
      grub> setup (hd0)
      grub>quit

  4. Reboot with "reboot".
