How to configure the RED tunnel compression

This article provides the configuration steps required to enable tunnel compression for a RED.

Sophos RED (UTM firmware > 9.2 and except Rev1 RED10's)

What to Do

Enabling RED tunnel compression will compress all traffic that is sent through the RED. Data compression may increase the throughput of the RED appliance in areas with slow Internet connections. However, any potential bandwidth improvements will depend on whether the data is already compressed. For example, HTTPS or SSH packets will already be compressed and so enabling tunnel compression may not show any bandwidth improvements.

Enabling tunnel compression on a RED will also introduce additional CPU overhead which will increase as the amount of traffic increases across the (compressed) RED tunnel. In some circumstances, particular with a RED10 experiencing high traffic demands, enabling tunnel compression may reduce throughput of the RED appliance due to the increased CPU overhead. In that case, disable tunnel compression.

Tunnel compression can be configured when you add a new RED to your UTM, or by editing an existing RED configuration.

How to Enable RED Tunnel Compression

  1. Login to the WebAdmin and go to RED Management | [Server] Client Management 
  2. Click 'Add RED' (or "Edit" an existing RED).
  3. Fill in the credentials for the RED.
  4. Click on the "+" next to 'Advanced'.
  5. Check the box  'Tunnel compression'.
  6. Click on 'Save' to apply the changes.
  • Fill in the credentials for the RED50
  • Spread the section Switch port configuration
  • Switch to VLAN as LAN port mode
  • Now choose between the following LAN port modes for the switch port:
    Untagged:packets won't be tagged with the VLAN ID
    Untagged, drop tagged: packets won't be tagged, already tagged packets will be dropped
    Tagged: packets will be tagged
    Unused: port not in use
