Error -17 occurs when sending a text message to an iPad

Issue

When trying to send a text message to an iPad the error 'Phone number not found: Error code -17' occurs.
As the iPad does not have a SIM card, is it possible to send a text message to this device?

Cause

The reason for this error is, that the Sophos Mobile Control (SMC) iOS app is not installed on the iPad.

What To Do

To successfully send a message to an iOS device without a SIM card follow these steps:

  1. Install the Sophos Mobile Control iOS app on the device.
  2. Activate the app. To do so, either run the task 'Activate iOS app' via the Self Service Portal or press the 'Activate iOS SMC app' button in the device details of the device itself. Please make sure the user opened the app once and allowed the app to receive push notifications.
  3. The app will be activated and synchrnoizes with the Sophos Mobile Control server.

After following these steps, you can send out text messages to the iPad. These messages will be displayed in the SMC app after clicking on the Notification.
