Sophos for Microsoft SharePoint: file types that are scanned

This article applies only to Sophos for Microsoft SharePoint version 1.0

Some types of document or file cannot be scanned by Sophos for Microsoft SharePoint. Additional filters or other software may be required.

What to do

Sophos for Microsoft SharePoint v 1.0 uses Windows IFilters to analyse content within common file types. This enables you to search for phrases within those documents.

File types scanned
By default, Sophos for Microsoft SharePoint scans content from the following files based on a combination of file type and extension:

  • Plain text (TXT)
  • Rich text (RTF)
  • HTML
  • Microsoft Office (earlier than Office 2007) documents (DOC, DOT, XLS, XLT, POT, PPS, PPT)
  • XML

File types not scanned by default and workarounds

You can install the following third-party IFilters without having to make any configuration changes to Sophos for Microsoft SharePoint v. 1.0:

Filetype which cannot be scanned Issue Solution/Workaround
PDF files This is an Adobe issue.

There is currently no actual workaround.

Office 2007 documents Download and install Office 2007 IFilters from Microsoft (recommended) or install Office 2007. (Filetypes: DOCX, DOCM, XLSX, XLSM,XLTX, XLTM, XLSB, PPTX, PPTM, POTX, POTM, PPSX, PPSM)
Excel 2007 binary format files (*.xlsb*) Download and install Office 2007 IFilters from Microsoft. MS Office alone is insufficient.
Word 2007  templates (*.dotx and *.dotm) Not scanned for phrases None
WordPerfect (WPD) Available from Corel

If you want Sophos for Microsoft SharePoint to extract content from a document type other than the ones listed above and have an IFilter for it, contact Sophos technical support to help you configure it.
