How to stop and start the PureMessage services

This article provides best practice advice for stopping and starting the Windows of PureMessage for Exchange.

Note: Incorrectly stopping or starting the PureMessage services can cause problems (i.e., mail building in queue, console not displaying properly, etc)).

Known to apply to the following Sophos product(s) and version(s)

PureMessage for Microsoft Exchange

What To Do

For PM 3.0.x for exchange 2000/2003 none cluster

Stop services

  1. Stop the Sophos AutoUpdate Service
  2. (SAU can restart some of our service during update stopping it first ensures this does not happen)
  3. Stop the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol service
  4. Stop the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service
  5. Stop the Sophos PureMessage Scanner service
  6. Stop the Sophos PureMessage Service
  7. Stop the Sophos PureMessage Running Object Table service
  8. Stop the Sophos Anti-virus service if needed I.E. SAV install issue.
  9. Open a command prompt and run 'IISRESET /STOP'

Start services

  1. Open a command prompt and run 'IISRESET /START'
  2. Stop the Sophos Anti-virus service if it was stopped
  3. Start the Sophos PureMessage Running Object Table service
  4. Start the Sophos PureMessage service
  5. Start the Sophos PureMessage Scanner service
  6. Start the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service
  7. Start the Simple Mail Transfer Protocol service
  8. Start the Sophos AutoUpdate Service
  9. End the almon.exe process and restart it from 'start/ all programs /start up'

For PM 3.0.x for exchange 2000/2003 cluster (this will cause the node to fail over)

Stop services

  1. Stop the Sophos AutoUpdate Service
  2. (SAU can restart some of our service during update stopping it first ensures this does not happen)
  3. Take all SMTP Virtual Server Instances offline
  4. Take the Exchange Information Store Instance offline
  5. Take the Sophos PureMessage service resource offline
  6. Stop the Sophos PureMessage Service
  7. Stop the Sophos PureMessage Running Object Table service
  8. Stop the Sophos Anti-virus service if needed i.e., SAV install issue.

Start services

  1. Stop the Sophos Anti-virus service if it was stopped
  2. Start the Sophos PureMessage Running Object Table service
  3. Start the Sophos PureMessage service
  4. Bring the Sophos PureMessage service resource online
  5. Bring the Exchange Information Store Instance online
  6. Bring all SMTP Virtual Server Instances online
  7. Start the Sophos AutoUpdate Service
  8. End the almon.exe process and restart it from 'start/ all programs /start up'

For PM 3.0.x for exchange 2007 none cluster and cluster (this will cause the node to fail over)

Stop services

  1. Stop the Sophos AutoUpdate Service
  2. (SAU can restart some of our service during update stopping it first ensures this does not happen)
  3. Stop the Microsoft Exchange Transport service
    • 2A. Take all SMTP Virtual Server Instances offline
  4. Stop the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service
    • 3A. Take the Exchange Information Store Instance offline
  5. Stop the Sophos PureMessage Scanner service
    • 4A. Take the Sophos PureMessage service resource offline
  6. Stop the Sophos PureMessage Service
  7. Stop the Sophos PureMessage Running Object Table service
  8. Stop the Sophos Anti-virus service if needed I.E. SAV install issue

Start services

  1. Stop the Sophos Anti-virus service if it was stopped
  2. Start the Sophos PureMessage Running Object Table service
  3. Start the Sophos PureMessage service
  4. Start the Sophos PureMessage Scanner service
    • Bring the Sophos PureMessage service resource online
  5. Start the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service
    • Bring the Exchange Information Store Instance online
  6. Start the Microsoft Exchange Transport service
    • Bring all SMTP Virtual Server Instances online
  7. Start the Sophos AutoUpdate Service
  8. End the almon.exe process and restart it from 'start/ all programs /start up'
