PureMessage for Microsoft Exchange: Spam rule update issues with Windows Indexing Service

Issue

The following error is seen in the PureMessage for Exchange SMTPScan.log:

<DATE> <TIME> Error: MoveFileEx for [D:\Program Files\Sophos\PureMessage\datadir] to [D:\Program Files\Sophos\PureMessage\datadirold] failed after [5] retry attempts., dwError = 5 (error code 0x00000005)

The following error is seen in the Sophos AutoUpdate log (ALUpdate.log):

Trace(<DATE> <TIME>): WARNING: SetupAction::Execute: PostAction threw an exception: boost::filesystem::rename: "C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\sophos_autoupdate1.dir\1210231916", "C:\ProgramFiles\Sophos\AutoUpdate\data\channels": Cannot create a file when that file already exists.
Trace(<DATE> <TIME>): ALUpdate(Install.Failure): Sophos PureMessage: 0x80004005

Cause

This is a known issue with PureMessage for Microsoft Exchange 3.0.1

What to do

This issue only affects PureMessage for Microsoft Exchange 3.0.1 which is no longer supported.  We recommend you upgrade to the latest version of PureMessage for Microsoft Exchange.
