Symptoms

The installation of PureMessage for Microsoft Exchange fails, and the following error is displayed:

Setup was unable to create the PureMessage databases

Error details: COM error-code 0x80004005 : Unspecified error

Cause

This can happen if you previously uninstalled the SQL instance of the SOPHOS from the SQL server, or uninstalled the SQL server itself.

What to do

NOTE: There are several similar error code. Therefore before following this article please confirm the exact error message displayed on screen does end:

COM error-code 0x80004005 : Unspecified error

Detach the existing PureMessage databases from the SQL Server instance

  1. On the server hosting the PureMessage databases open a Command prompt (Start | Run | cmd.exe).
  2. Enter each of the following commands:
    osql -E -S .\sophos -Q "drop database savexquar"
    osql -E -S .\sophos -Q "drop database savexrprt"
    osql -E -S .\sophos -Q "drop database savexcnfg"
    osql -E -S .\sophos -Q "drop database savexdir"

Remove the existing database files

  1. Open the Windows services list (Start | Run | services.msc).
  2. Stop the SQL Server (SOPHOS) service
  3. Browse to the folder:
    \Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.x\data\
  4. Delete the following eight files:
    • SavexQuar.mdf
    • SavexQuar_log.LDF
    • SavexRprt.mdf
    • SavexRprt_log.LDF
    • SavexCnfg.mdf
    • SavexCnfg_log.LDF
    • SavexDir.mdf
    • SavexDir_log.ldf
  5. Start the SQL Server (SOPHOS) service.

Re-run the PureMessage installation.
