What to do

Spam rules locked by inetinfo.exe

  1. Go to C:\Program Files\Sophos\PureMessage\ folders, and delete the two folders datatemp and bintemp.
  2. Open Windows Services.
  3. Stop the 'Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)' service.
  4. Right-click the Sophos shield in the system tray, and select 'Update Now'. The update should now succeed.
  5. Start the 'Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)' service.

Sophos AutoUpdate failed to update the pmsr package (the spam rules package). This occurs because 'inetinfo.exe' keeps the spam rules locked.

The failed installation creates two folders 'datatemp' and 'bintemp' in C:\Program Files\Sophos\PureMessage\. These folders must be deleted.

The file pmx_engine.dll has not been updated

  2. Stop the following services
    • 'PureMessage' service
    • 'Sophos Anti-Virus' service
    • 'Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)' service.
  3. Find the file pmx_engine.dll and rename it to pmx_engine.xxx
  4. Right-click the Sophos shield in the system tray, and select 'Update Now'. The update should now succeed.
  5. Restart the services.
