Unable to connect to the PureMessage service. Error code: 0x8007042d

Issue

When attempting to open the PureMessage for Exchange console the following error is shown:

The administration console is unable to connect to the PureMessage service on the local server.
The error code is: 0x8007042d

Cause

Either or both of the below reasons:

  • The account which the Sophos PureMessage service is set to log on as does not have the 'Log on as a service' user right
  • The password entered in the Sophos PureMessage service's 'Log On' tab is incorrect

What To Do

Check the account which the Sophos PureMessage service is set to log on as has the 'Log on as a service' user right

  1. Open the Domain Security Policy | Local Security Policy MMC (Domain Controller Security Policy if PureMessage is installed on a Windows 2003 Domain Controller)
  2. Locate Locate Policies | User Rights Assignment | Log on as a service
  3. Right-click and select Properties
  4. Confirm whether the account which the Sophos PureMessage service is set to log on as (by default DOMAIN\SophosPureMessage) is contained in the list
  5. If not, add this account to the list, further details on this step are contained in this Microsoft article Add the Log on as a service right to an account
  6. Start the Sophos PureMessage service

Check the password entered in the Sophos PureMessage service's 'Log On' tab is correct

  1. Open the Services MMC | Start | Run... | services.msc
  2. Right-click 'Sophos PureMessage' and select 'Properties'
  3. In the 'Log On' tab, enter the correct password for the account
  4. If the password is not known then it can be re-set though these same steps will need to be repeated on all PureMessage servers
  5. Start the Sophos PureMessage service
