PureMessage for Microsoft Exchange: installation fails with COM error code 0x8002802b

While attempting to install PureMessage, installation fails and you see the following error message:

Setup encountered an error while gathering system information.
Error details: COM error-code 0x8002802b : Element not found.

Sophos product and version
PureMessage for Microsoft Exchange, version 3 and above

What to do

To resolve this issue, re-register the Wbemdisp.dll file:

  1. Use an administrative account to log on to the affected computer.
  2. Open a command prompt. (Click Start | Run, type cmd, and then click OK).
  3. At the command prompt, type:
    regsvr32 wbemdisp.dll
  4. In the Regsvr32 dialog box, click OK.

You should now be able to install PureMessage.

This error appears to have been caused by Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Advanced Client. For further information, please see Microsoft KB 887308

Please note that if you re-install the SMS Advanced Client or apply a service pack hotfix, you may have to register the Wbemdisp.dll file again.
