Sophos small business solutions: Merging client firewall configurations

When constructing, or editing, a Sophos Client Firewall configuration for Sophos small business solutions, you might need to merge information from two different firewall configuration files. This can be useful when importing backups or other saved configurations.

You can import Sophos Client Firewall configurations from Sophos Control Center, or at the local workstation.

What to do

Configurations exported from workstations can be imported via Sophos Control Center, and vice versa.

The options 'Load the general configuration' and 'Load the global and application rules' are advanced options that enable you to fine tune your merged configuration. Usually both options should be selected.

1. Merging configurations in Sophos Control Center

  1. Open Sophos Control Center.
  2. In the menu bar, select Action|Advanced firewall configuration.
  3. In the General tab, select 'Import'.
  4. Browse to your saved configuration and select it.
  5. Click 'Open'.
  6. Ensure that the following is selected:
    • Merge
  7. Generally you should also ensure that the following are selected:
    • Load the general configuration
    • Load the global and application rules
  8. Click 'OK'.

2. Merging configurations at the local workstation

  1. Right-click the firewall icon in the System tray.
  2. Select 'Configure'.
  3. In the General tab, select 'Import'.
  4. Browse to your saved configuration and select it.
  5. Click 'Open'.
  6. Ensure that the following is selected:
    • Merge
  7. Generally you should also ensure that the following are selected:
    • Load the general configuration
    • Load the global and application rules
  8. Click 'OK'.
