Sophos Anti-Virus: scan fails and returns error 0xa0040202

Issue
Sophos Anti-Virus reports that a virus scan has failed, and returns error 0xa0040202 .

It may report:

Virus Scan Results: Sophos Anti-Virus, Unexpected error: Unknown error: 0xa0040202

The log file SAV.txt, may display a message similar to:

20051117 183301 "Scanning C:\path\<filename>" returned SAVI error 0xa0040202: Scan failed

This shows the path and filename of the file causing the issue. 

Depending on which operating system you are running, the location of the log files will vary, for example:

  • Windows XP and earlier:
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sophos\Sophos Anti-Virus\logs\
  • Windows Vista and later:
    C:\ProgramData\Sophos\Sophos Anti-Virus\logs\

What to do

  1. Go to the location of the file indicated in the log file message, in this example: C:\path\<filename>.
  2. Make a copy of the file, and Submit the copy to Sophos for investigation.

Note : The size of sample files is limited to 30 Mb.
