What to do

You need to check, and possibly edit, the registry. Before you start, refer to the knowledgebase article, which warns about editing the registry and describes how to back it up.

  1. Go to the following registry keys,
    • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE

and ensure the logged in account used under the updating policy has full access permissions.

  2. Restart the computer. On the Sophos shield in the system tray, click 'Update Now'.

Technical Information
Browsing to C:\Program Files\Sophos\AutoUpdate via Windows Explorer will result in the following message:

C:\Program Files\sophos\AutoUpdate is not accessible
Access is denied

The folder has been set to 'Read-only', manually changing this to full access and then applying changes will just reset it back to 'Read-only'.
