Sophos AutoUpdate fails on the server, and the AutoUpdate log displays the message:
'Synchronisation of local files with server failed: Could not write file to hard disk.'
This can happen when quota limits are enabled on a Sophos Anti-Virus management server. This results in insufficient space being made available, even when, overall, the server has sufficient space. This can happen when quotas are enabled on any server, but typically occurs when a Windows 2003 server is configured as a file server and quota limits are enabled by default.
The amount of space required by the files installed in C:\Program Files\Sophos\AutoUpdate\Cache\ is quite large. If the set quota is exceeded, further writes are denied by the operating system and an error message is generated.
What to do
Remove any quota limitations from the 'SophosSAU<computername>0' user, which is the user that 'owns' C:\Program Files\Sophos\AutoUpdate\Cache\.
- Open Windows Explorer. Right-click the 'C:' drive and select 'Properties'. Select the 'Quota' tab.
- Click on 'Quota Entries...' to show the individual entries for the disk.
- Right-click the 'SophosSAU<computername>0' user, select 'Properties', and choose the option that does not limit disk usage.
