Sophos Anti-Virus: error returned during scan - 0x8000ffff: Catastrophic failure

Issue

Sophos Anti-Virus returns one or more of the following errors during a scan:

  • A SAV Interface error:

    0x8000ffff: Catastrophic failure
    This is typically seen in sav.txt when trying to scan various files .

  • Error in application event logs:
    no version of component messagedsfactory are registered
  • Sophos related .dll files such as componentmanager.dll in the event logs.

What to do

Run the following command from the command line for each DLL mentioned:
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Sophos\Sophos Anti-Virus\Localisation.dll"
or
regsvr32 "C:\Program Files\Sophos\Sophos Anti-Virus\ComponentManager.dll"
etc.

If this does not resolve the issue, remove all Sophos Anti-Virus components and re-install.
