On a computer with Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+ and 3rd party software which installs a virtual device, the following error may be seen:

e03d0035 The on access driver failed to attach to \device\<unsupported device>, because the io method is not supported

In addition in the system event log on the computer you may see:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: SAVOnAccessFilter
Event Category: None
Event ID: 53
Description: The on-access driver failed to attach to \device\, because the IO method is not supported.

Examples of devices might be:

  • \device\ADVirtualDisk\Volume - in the case of the Adobe Virtual Disk installed as part of the CS4 suite
  • \device\Raxco PerfectDisk - this loads itself in such a way that the file system is identified as a device. The filter driver in Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 2000+ cannot then scan the file successfully, because it is looking for a device that does not exist.

What to do

This input/output (I/O) method is not supported by Sophos Anti-Virus. These error messages can be safely ignored.
