Sophos Web Protection is able to perform URI security checks on HTTPS requests if the browser being used supports Server Name Indication (SNI).

SNI enabled browsers request the domain name before the certificate is committed to the server.  This allows filtering applications to intercept the domain name request without having to intercept and decode HTTPS traffic.

Browsers that support SNI, and are supported by Sophos Web Protection are:

  • IE7+ on Windows Vista+ (not supported on Windows XP)
  • Firefox 2+
  • Opera 8+
  • Chrome on Vista+ (for Windows XP it is only supported on Chrome 6+)
  • Safari 2.1+ on Windows Vista+
