What to do

This issue may be seen under various circumstances, including the following:

  • When installing you see the error Couldn't set locale correctly. However, Sophos Anti-Virus for UNIX installs correctly. The same error message may be seen if you uninstall, but removal proceeds correctly. In these cases your current locale is not correctly configured. For example, running /bin/sh will produce a similar error message.
  • When you run a scan (savscan), some unicode default characters (boxes) are displayed in the savscan message. This can occur if the appropriate fonts are not available for those characters.
  • The command savconfig does not display correctly. It requires an English locale to be installed so that the fallback to English can be correctly displayed.
