Using Sophos Anti-Virus virus identity (IDE) files on NetWare.

Applies to the following Sophos product(s) and version(s)

Sophos Anti-Virus for NetWare 4.69.0

What To Do

Note: Old IDE files are not automatically deleted from Central Installation Directories (CIDs). You should delete them and replace them with IDEs for the correct version.

  1. Copy the IDE files into the Sophos Anti-Virus working directory on the server (SYS:SWEEP by default).
  2. At the server console, enter the commands UNLOAD SWEEP and then LOAD SWEEP (plus any required parameters).
  3. Purge the central checksum file. At the main menu on the Sophos Anti-Virus screen at the server, select 'Central checksums' followed by 'Purge checksums' followed by 'Yes'.

Updating Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows 2003 workstations

Note: Old IDE files are not automatically deleted from the CIDs. You should delete them and replace them with IDEs for the correct version.

  1. From a workstation, copy the IDE files to the CID for Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 workstations. The default is \\<servername>\SYS\SWEEP\NTInst\i386.
  2. At the Windows taskbar, select Start|Run.
  3. Browse to Setup.exe in your CID (see step 2) and select it.
  4. At the very end of the path in the 'Run' window, type a space followed by /update.
  5. Click OK.
  6. The workstations will update when they next check for a central update.

The final path should take the form \\<servername>\SYS\SWEEP\NTInst\i386\Setup.exe /update where <servername> is the name of your server.

Updating Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows Me workstations

Note: Old IDE files are not automatically deleted from the CIDs. You should delete them and replace them with IDEs for the correct version.

  1. From a workstation, copy the IDE files to the CID for Windows 95/98/Me workstations. The default is \\<servername>\SYS\SWEEP\W95Inst where <servername> is the name of your server.
  2. At the Windows taskbar, select Start|Run.
  3. Browse to Setup.exe in your CID (see above) and select it.
  4. At the very end of the path in the 'Run' window, type a space followed by /update.
  5. Click OK.
  6. If necessary, click on the 'Done' button.
  7. The workstations will update when they next check for a central update.

The final path should take the form \\<servername>\SYS\SWEEP\W95Inst\Setup.exe /update where <servername> is the name of your server.

Updating Macintosh workstations

  1. From a Macintosh, place IDE files in the macinst|IDE folder on the server.
  2. The Sophos Anti-Virus for Macintosh on-demand scanner checks for new IDE files each time it is launched. The InterCheck on-access scanner checks each time the Macintosh is started.
  3. You will be prompted to restart the Macintosh, or re-launch Sophos Anti-Virus, as appropriate.

How to confirm that the IDE files have been loaded in NetWare

  • The IDE files loaded are listed in the Sophos Anti-Virus log (SYS:SWEEP\SWEEP.LOG by default).
  • Select 'Virus library' from the 'Administration' menu. Check the number of viruses and that the new viruses appear in the list.
