The permissions on the system /tmp directory may be changed during an update or installation failure.
Permissions are changed to 700 (in numerical form).

Cause
This issue occurs in rare circumstances where an update exception is logged before the updating mechanism has determined the product installation directory. In this scenario the savupdateException.log file is written to the /tmp directory and permissions are automatically set on the directory even if it already exists.
What To Do
Correct the permission issues on the temporary folder.
Further Information
If updates continue to fail permissions on /tmp may be reset again. Run the following command to attempt an update with verbose logging:
/opt/sophos-av/bin/savupdate -v5
Please contact Sophos support for assistance in troubleshooting the update problem.
Note
This issue has been resolved in a maintenance release of Sophos Anti-Virus - version 7.5.6.
