Error 1618 'Another installation is in progress' during SUM installation

Symptoms

After installing SUM, the first update may appear to fail and you might also see the  following error:

Error 1618 Another installation is in progress

Sophos Update Manager

Cause

During the first update of a freshly installed Update Manager, the Update Manager performs a self-update, which has a timeout of 10 minutes. Part of the self-update installs VCRedist from Microsoft, which can sometimes take longer than 10 minutes to complete. If the Update Manager timeout is met before VCRedist completes, an Update Failed message will appear in Enterprise Console. If you right-click the Update Manager and select “Update Now,” if VCRedist still has not finished its routines, you may see Error 1618 Another installation is in progress

What to do

Wait for the VCRedist installation to complete, then either manually run “Update Now” for the Update Manager, or wait until the next scheduled update to run.
