Checking file and folder permissions in Windows NT/2000/XP/2003

The icon for a shared folder shows a folder being held out by a hand, as if for sharing. The hand is more visible in Windows NT and Windows 2000 than it is in Windows XP and Windows 2003.

What to do

Checking the permissions on a shared folder

  • Right-click the folder
  • select 'Properties'
  • select the Sharing tab
  • check to see if the folder is shared
  • select 'Permissions'
  • select the relevant user or group
  • note what sharing permissions the folder has.

Checking the security permissions on a file or folder

  • Right-click the file
  • select 'Properties'
  • select the Security tab
  • select the relevant user or group
  • note what security permissions the file or folder has.
