SafeGuard LAN Crypt Client: You are unable to save certain types of file, e.g. MS Office files

Issue
Under certain circumstances you are unable to save files. This occurs as follows:

You open a file which, although it has an encryption rule applied to it, is actually unencrypted (for example due to the fact that no initial encryption has been performed). When you later attempt to save the file, it requires encryption because it has the encryption rule applied to it (change of the encryption status). However, SafeGuard Lan Crypt is unable to encrypt and save the file.

The reason that it cannot do this is because some programs (e.g. Microsoft Office 2007) use a special approach when saving files, e.g. creating a temporary file - renaming the file - changing the encryption status. This process is incompatible with what Lan Crypt needs to do to save files.

Product
SafeGuard LAN Crypt Client version 3.6x and higher

Client OS

Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP

What to do

If you are using Microsoft Office 2007, we strongly recommend that you specify the executable of each program included in this software. Add the programs to the LAN Crypt Configuration as 'Special Rename Applications'. Using the information specified here, SafeGuard LAN Crypt will now be able to encrypt files of this type correctly.

  1. Select the programs which show this type of behavior when saving files, and in the context menu click 'Add program with specific behavior when saving files'.
  2. Enter the name of the executable of the program, e.g. WINWORD.EXE
  3. Click OK.
  4. Repeat these steps for each program you want to add.

The programs you have selected are displayed in the right-hand pane.

Alternatively, you can add the Special Rename Applications to the Client directly, via a Registry entry:

Hive: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Key: System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Utimaco\SGLCENC
Value Name: SpecialRenamePrograms
Value Type: REG_SZ
Value: WINWORD.EXE;EXCEL.EXE;POWERPNT.EXE;MSACCESS.EXE;OUTLOOK.EXE
