How to use Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption Emergency Disk?

Answer

In case of an emergency uninstallation of Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption (e.g. damaged operating system) create a bootable disk that contains the following files from the original Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption installation CD-ROM.

- Sgeasy.EXE
- SGEASY.hmf
- SGECRYPT.mod
- SGENLS.mod
- SGEKRNL.mod

Hint: Copy the files to another floppy disk if there is no space left on the boot disk. Start the computer from the boot disk and switch to the emergency disk when the command line appears. Run Sgeasy.exe to start the Emergency Tools.

Another, more convenient way to copy these files is to start the Emergency Disk Wizard ("Start" -> "Run" -> "Programs" -> "Sophos" -> "Emergency Disk Wizard") on another machine which has the same version of Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption installed. As of version 4.60 the original Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption product CD is bootable as well and offers the same emergency repair functionalities.

Please note: If you had created the Emergency Disk on another machine, do not restore the kernel from that second machine onto the first machine.


Following options are available in the Sophos Disk Enrcryption Emergency Tools

Uninstall (Decrypt and uninstall security kernel)
Uninstallation can be used to decrypt the encrypted partitions and to remove the PBA.

Backup (Create a backup of the security kernel)
Creates a backup of the security kernel into a file. "Uninstall" and "Backup" only appear if an intact kernel was found (available as of Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption versions 4.x).

Restore (Restore a previously saved kernel)
With this function you can restore the system kernel from a kernel backup file in the case of a system malfunction. Naturally this assumes that you have backed up the system kernel at an earlier point in time. Without a backup the kernel cannot be restored.

Please note: Restore kernel may not be executed if the backup file does not correspond with the latest status. This applies if the encryption status of the hard disk(s) was changed between saving the system kernel and the restoration.

Repair (Try to patch up a defective kernel)
Select "Repair" if you do not have a current backup of the system kernel. This function is only necessary if there is no backup of the system kernel or if the backup file does not correspond with the latest status of the system kernel.


Please note:
Specific rights are required if the system should be uninstalled. By default only the account SYSTEM has the necessary rights.

After an emergency uninstallation of Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption, the folders and icons will remain. To remove Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption completely, navigate to the "Control Panel" and open "Add or Remove Programs". Select Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption, choose "Change/Remove" and confirm your selection. After that, Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption is uninstalled completely. In addition, you should carry out a volume check in Windows. For further information, refer to your Windows manual.
