Question

How to troubleshoot SDE installations

Answer

As of version 4.60, Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption relies on the logging functionality of Microsoft's Windows Installer.
Especially, when it comes to unattended installation of Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption, we recommend to adjust the procedure in a way that makes sure a log file is actually generated. This, of course, would be too late if the installation errored out. To avoid this, we consider it best practise to proceed as follows.

Briefly, the installation should include these basic steps:

- Activate Microsoft Installer logging before the (un)installation of Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption
- (Un)install Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption
- De-activate Microsoft Installer logging after the (un)installation of Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption

To log the installation via commandline, the following parameters could be used:

msiexec /i sde.msi /qn /L*vx %SystemRoot%\SDE_INST.log ADDLOCAL= "add own parameters"

This command will create the MSI-logfile c:\sde_inst.log.

It is also possible to activate MSI logging via the registry and/or group policies
