Question

What does SDE Error 1244 "Reading from a drive has failed" mean? How can I solve this problem?

Answer

The attempt to read data from a drive failed. If this error occurs during the installation of Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption, make sure that physical hard disk “0” includes the start partition. Protection or virus programs can prevent access to certain drives too; turn them off during the Installation of Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption.

If you get the Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption error "SDE 1244" the most common reason is that your laptop has an internal multimedia card reader. This device integrates as hard disc 0 in your system.

To verify that open the "disk management" and you will find a screen like below.

The solution is to deactivate this device in the device management or BIOS during the installation and initial encryption of Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption. Afterwards you can enable the device again.
