Can the Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption client and server products be installed in a virtual machine environment (e.g. VMware or Microsoft VirtualPC)?

Recently, our technical support has been approached by customers who asked us whether a scenario would be supported, in which the Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption Administration would be run in a virtual machine environment (e.g. VMware or Microsoft VirtualPC).

Although no extensive QA cycles have been run in virtual environments, there are currently no problems known by Sophos regarding the usage of such environments, nor has Sophos knowledge of any reason why there should be an issue. Due to lack of experience with support cases on virtual machines you might experience longer response time per incident. We are very motivated to give support in these environments and will prioritize those incidents accordingly.

There may be limitations of the virtual machine software itself (e.g. no USB support), which would naturally result in a limited functionality of our own products (e.g. no smartcard/token logon to administration console possible if running it in a Virtual PC environment without USB support).

As software manufacturer typically modify their products on a regular basis, this statement may change in the future.

In case, you need to report an issue or any kind of misbehaviour of our product, you could help our support by pro-actively informing them that your version is actually running in a virtual machine environment. This information would speed up the process of investigation.
