Question

Does encryption using Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption lead to a loss of performance?

Answer

First of all we must distinguish between the initial encryption (directly after installation) and the process of en- / decryption in every day operation.

If the option to encrypt the whole harddisk ('Complete') is selected, initial encryption will begin automatically immediately after installation.
This takes 2-3 minutes per gigabyte of the harddisk (e.g. 2.2 min. on an IBM T40 using the AES algorithm).

The potential loss of performance caused by encryption, in routine operation, depends on the algorithm used. This loss will not be noticed if up-to-date hardware is in use.
