Question

How to avoid SDE 1005 during installation of Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption?

Answer

This issue occurs because PartMgr is not registered at Windows side (diskdrive upperfilters), the affected computer's upperfilter entry is empty.

In case PartMgr is missing (and that could have several reasons, but definitely not Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption), Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption 4.x will create following error message: "SDE1005:Subsystem has reported an I/0 error".

Solution:

- Check if "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]"
"UpperFilters"= has an empty value. If yes then:

1. Add a registry key value "PartMgr" in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=hex(7):50,00,61,00,72,00,74,00,4d,00,67,00,72,00,00,00,00,00

2. Restart the operating system

3. Wait until Windows has detected new disks and asks to restart

4. Restart the operating system

5. The installation of Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption should run through without any problems.
