Question

Is it possible to update the Rescue and Recovery version (e.g. to version 3.x) without reinstallation of Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption? What has to be considered?

Answer

Yes, it is possible to update Rescue and Recovery without uninstallation of Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption.

However, some additional steps are mandatory to ensure the Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption encryption drivers are included in the Rescue and Recovery partition.

After updating Rescue and Recovery, follow the steps outlined below:

1. Do not restart after the Rescue and Recovery update.

2. Start MBRsync.exe from the Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption program directory to update the RnR changes in the MBR.

3. Start WinPERepair.exe from the Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption program directory to add the Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption encryption drivers to the RnR partition.

4. Reboot the system.

Background information:
During an update of Rescue and Recovery the Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption encryption drivers will be removed and the MBR will be changed. If the encryption drivers are not re-added again a BSOD (Blue Screen) will appear the next time you start the RnR partition.
