The following is a small glossary of commonly used terms when referring to Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption.

TermDefinition and explanation
PBA

Pre-boot authentication screen. The PBA is the SDE logon screen. To see which function keys you can use when entering your password in the PBA, please see Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption (SDE): using function keys with the PBA.

Kernel

(system kernel)

The SDE kernel is one of the most important components of the SDE installation. It is the component of SDE that calls the PBA in order to gain access to the system. Therefore, if you do not have access to the system kernel, you will not have access to the system.

For this reason, after Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption is installed, you may want to back up the kernel regularly. The kernel also contains all of the SDE settings.

For more information about the system kernel and how to back it up, please see Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption (SDE): creating a kernel backup.

BartPE

BartPE is a freeware tool for loading a Windows pre-installed environment (PE). Sophos will shortly provide a tool for creating a BartPE CD with other SDE files to use in case you need to access your data in the event of system errors. The BartPE tool that is available on the internet will not work with SDE.
