This article describes the options available in the Emergency Recovery Tools menu when you boot up from the Emergency CD, floppy disk or USB drive. For full troubleshooting details, please see Sophos Disk Encryption (SDE): restoring the PBA.
Note: you must log in using your SDE credentials in order to run the Emergency CD/USB/floppy.
|Uninstall||This option allows you to decrypt the hard drive and uninstall the SDE kernel. For more information, please see Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption (SDE): how to perform an emergency decryption and uninstall SDE.|
|Backup||This option allows you to create a kernel backup. |
This option will attempt to restore the PBA with a kernel backup.
If an internal kernel backup exists, you can choose whether to use the internal kernel or the backup on the CD/USB/floppy:
- Use the internal kernel when an external backup doesn't exist or is out of date.
- Use the external kernel if there is a possibility that the hard disk is damaged, to avoid data loss.
|Repair||This option will attempt to repair the internal kernel. Always try restoring the kernel before attempting this option: this procedure is can take a long time and is not guaranteed to work.|
