DCOM error 10021

When a Windows 2003 server running the Sophos Control Center component of Sophos Anti-Virus Small Business Edition (SBE) is upgraded to Windows 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1), DCOM errors with the Event ID 10021 may be present in the event log. The description will contain references to the CLSIDs for

  • smtemlib: {3E6DAE76-A08D-4D70-B1D6-41C3AD4DD688}
  • sdbnsrvc: {C6CF92EC-0AD4-457A-9E0D-95A341987888}
  • ManagementService: {E0992E08-C43F-4419-BDD8-E60F19CB0AA3}.

What to do

  1. Select Start|Run and type
  2. In 'Component Services', browse to Console Root|Component Services|Computers|My Computer|DCOM Config.
  3. In the list, locate the following
    • smtemlib
    • sdbnsrvc
    • ManagementService (a Sophos component).
  4. For each:
    1. Select 'Properties'.
    2. Select the Security tab.
    3. Change 'Launch and Activation Permissions' to 'Use Default'.
    4. Change 'Configuration Permissions' to 'Use Default'.
    5. Select 'Apply'.
  5. Restart the following services
    • Sophos Database Notification Service
    • Sophos SBE Management Service.

The errors will stop appearing in the event log.
